Well its been an ages since I posted last. I'm back in London again, taking a small break from film and trying out game cinematics. I have join a new team at the mill to try and make some geeky projects. So far its alot of fun and fast paced.
I have been computerless for monthes so i have not sculpted anything at home since nz.
Here is a little sketch of a warrior returning home.

I need to get faster at concept sculpting and I also want to get into doing paint overs.

I see a lot of folk doing them really quickly with great results.

So I gave it a try. The sculpt and paint over took about a day.

Ideally I would have two of these or this and 10 greyscale variations or both ;)

I put my hands up I suck at ps but that will change ! I know the photoshoping is a totally cliché but you got to start somewhere.

Hey guys small update .

Got back form London last Sunday, the jet lag was crazy but I was worth it.

I feel like I'm back to normal to so hopefully I'll will get some more posting on the go.

Just before I left Scotland I installed zbrush on my tiny netbook for a laugh. Amazingly it runs pretty well.

You can have millions of polys but its ok for doing quick sketches.

Here is a barbarian I did, about 2 hours. You have to take it a bit slower since the key are tiny.

Pretty happy with him since the train was bumpy as hell.

I hold my hands up I suck at digital painting FACT !

At art school since I was in the animation dep, I never really painted that much after first year. I regret not learning to paint. My friend Philippe Gaulier gave me a folder of about 30 images, god know how long ago. The aim is to try and copy the image as fast as possible, in around 15-30 mins.

The goal is to hopefully learn a little about light and colour, plus speed up :).

Ok here is today's. Pretty crap but hopefully we'll see an improvement as time goes by.

I'm using painter and stopped at 30 mins.

Long time no see, I thought I would be posting more since I came to new zealand but No!

As always I get obsessed with other things and forget about my passion.

I find it really hard to by creative after a 10 shift at work especially if you have been sculpting all day. I'm not complaining it rocks!

I have been trying really hard to find time to finish old projects so here are some. I hate post wips I'm not happy with but my friend hamish beachman(sits beside me at work) constantly reminds me that I'm not posting enough, so here it is.

Here is a study of my good friend Henry south. Again I think I did this about 2 years ago. I might pick this guy up. I have always thought henry has a awesome face. He looks like a guy for star wars. One day he may become a jedi.

It started out as a head speed sculpt ages ago. I have decide to finish him completely! and may be get him printed.

I'm really enjoying the freedom of doing creatures of my own, you can really just do want you want.

Hey Guys,

A lot has happen since I posted god knows when long ago. I'm no longer in living in London, I currently work in Wellington, New Zealand. Its a long way away from the smog but living next to a beach(very cold beach but a beach none the less) is pretty cool.

One thing I have noticed living here is I have more time for my own work(because I have no mate yet, sad but true). Here is a speed sculpt I finished up. Unless I make more friends soon you'll be seeing more of me. I'm still working on my fall series but its hard without my ref books but they are on there way.

finally I got something cool in cinefex ! no mention though . last year I was really lucky to be the main modeler on the kraken creature for the 2010 clash of the titans. it was really hard work, long hour but worth it in the end. fingers crossed for a mention when narnia comes along .

Yeah this is a video of me sculpting my latest character in my fall series.
The series is a thing I plan to do for a long time on and off .
Hopefully end up with range of model that all tie together some how.

Last Friday was of coarse Halloween. In the final hour we decide to make an enough to go as Cluedo character post murder. The elements were against us but I think we did a pretty good job.

And some block we met in the pub.

Who did I hear you ask? Well is turns out, Mrs scarlet hit Reverend Green with the candle stick while he stabbed Col.Mustard . As Mustard fell to his death he throw the rope around Miss Scarlett neck. What goes around comes around I guess.

Well thats my third week of sculpting over. Most the class are going to be casting next week, but me and few overs are going to spend the week on another project.
I think I'm going to do a quick portrait and the rest of the time drawing or take it easy.

Here is my figure piece I have been working on in the mornings .
She is my first I have taken my time over. I know there are a few proportion mistakes I would have liked to tighten up but time was against us. In the normal year the students spend 5 week on a figure and get it looking mint. I have learnt so much over the course, lots of really crazy deep stuff thats beyond proportion and gesture. I just hope I can learn to apply it to my work.

So thats me been in Florence for a week, Its been an interesting trip so far, meeting all the different people on the course and getting settle in to the routine of the school.
The hardest thing so far has been dealing with the heat. I landed in the middle of a heat wave here in italy, 35 degree plus. Being a Scotsman am not use to anything above 5 , so I have had no energy at all.

Here some shots of the studio, as you can see there is not air con or fans because of the dust.
The studio is full of past students work ,which is totally inspiring.
This week we started a skull study which we will use for a portrait study next week and a 3 week figure study.I'll post some shots later next week when she starts looking more human.

Hey Guys been ages.
Right well since I last posted, Narnia 2 has come out and my giant got into the trailer which totally rocked. I went to the London premiere and when this shot came up the kids behind me said "wow".
It really made my day. The movie over all was ok not a LOTR or anything but still cool.

Tomorrow I'm off to florence for a month to the florence academy of school. Over the next month I'm going to attend there sculpture summer school.
Hopefully over the next month I will get a ton of sketching done too and I plan to blog as much as I can !

What do I mean by full circle ?

Well Its been about 2 years since I started this blog.
In that time there have periods when I have posted lot and posted little.
At one time I considers this an art blog.

Over the last 10 months,My efforts on the artistic and blog front have been pitiful to be honest.
Alot has been down to circumstance and my laziness.
Not having a pc and no direct internet access has not helped either.
So what has been taking up my free time I hear you ask?

The world of Visual Effect and London of course.

Since I have moved I have had the chance to work on three major feature films such as

10,000 BC ( mpc did all the shots with the mammoths) I mostly did environment/prop modelling.

Then came Fred Claus. Me and two other guys were on “fred” for most of the duration of the show,
I was lucky enough to work on a large percentage of
the digital doubles elves and on the North pole ice Environment .

Quite recently I have moved on to narnia 2 :Prince Caspian,
right now making more digi doubles which is really really cool !!!
So I have not been completely lazy

Hopefully now I'm a bit more settled I can get back in to posting every week and finish of some old projects.

Well I've had a "pure braw crimbo" best of all I know this is sad but I got to sit down at my pc and fanny about, something I have not had a chance to do since august.

I watched the Dr Who Christmas special which was a bit rubbish besides that, I have enjoyed some of the early shows. The one thing about the doctor is that he try's to come across hard but he's not really, got me thinking how would I design the "Who" or at least another one of his time traveling kind.
here is a two hour concept knocked out in zbrush and ps.I would love to finish it but back to London soon and my pc is staying at home which suck ass:(.

"the modern man" Been pretty busy searching for work. few companies asked if I was comfortable with modeling photo realistic people, I said yeah but i have nothing Polished to show. So here is a wip photo realistic man, Base mesh modelled in modo and detailed in zbrush (thats zbrush screen grab). I think I'm going to turn him in to muay thai boxer. I'm going to push myself to bloody texture this dude and put him in a scene. I'm going to go back to chase and texture him too sometime.
Looking forward to finishing this dude because after him am finally going back to my routes with a stylized character. I'm very lucky to say that I'm collaborating with Kevin Dalton http://kevindalton.blogspot.com/

He has done a real top dollar design ,orthos and pose sheets lovin it. Pissed off I really want to start it but getting work is number one on the to do list and they want photo realistic people.

The first draft of my new reel is done. I have been rendering for weeks so boring. hope you like it, the compression made it a bit jumpy in bits so sorry ,i'll need to fix it some hooooo.

This is my latest model, he is called chase. He is a character I came up with and designed. I felt I needed something like a soldier in my reel so I started designing a "spriggan" style boy soldier. you can see the early design sketch on my blog (its pretty rough)

He is still a work in progress , I still have the hair and wrist armour to do. After the poly modeling I'll take him in to zbrush to add detail.

I started the piece a few days ago to produce some new portfolio work to help me get a new post
The idea developed as I progressed. I liked the idea of a General but then it turned toward a person forced to serve his worlds Dictator (You know the deal).
I started with a base mesh, took it in to zbrush, sculpted, textured and then rendered it in maya with mental ray. Then I did some ps work using filters to get the grime look that I wanted.
Hope you guys like it, C&C welcome. I think I'm going to do the Dictator some time. I think he will have a big ass monocal!

Hey dudes and dudettes thats me back online thank god for that and taking some time out to make a new reel (aka the edinburgh studio closed SHEEEET!) So right now as we speak im whipping up some new models for my reel , which is fun but bloody hard!.

This guy is called monkey slash fish lips and he is totally horrible! that what i was going for

Wolfman concept I have just started model this character I thinking about taking down a simon bsley route and make him totally HUGE!! but I have realised the modeling ripped people is well hard but i be fine eek!!

i think this is the coolest thing ever blog rule fact . right i joined a sculpture class about four weeks ago the is me first sculpture pretty much is took about 4 hours give or take. it pretty gash but i enjoyed it so much
